60 Second Review - NintendoLand

Graphics
Lets get this out of the way, Nintendoland is by no means the best ever looking game, it does a remarkable job of show casing the worlds of Nintendo whilst keeping a standard style through out.

Each of the games falls into a few styles with the most prominent being the patchwork style. Each game's style suits the game your playing, with some seeming like they could be real world games. Donkey Kong's Crash Course is one such game, themed like building blocks glued to a blackboard seems like the kind of thing you could make.

Gameplay
This is the part where NintendoLand shines, with 12 different games, with various play styles and player limits each game is a blast to play. Team up to hunt a ghost in Luigi's Ghost Mansion, with a similar feel to pacman, or take off in Metroid Blast, fight with your friends against waves of aliens or against them in standard a death match fare.

Playing each game introduces new ways to play, with the best I found being Yoshi's Fruit Cart. It's simple enough draw a line on the game pad to make Yoshi's move, and collect the fruit and enter the gate. Simple right? Not so fast. You draw the line on the game pad, but the fruit is only shown on the tv, you need to keep looking back and forth to work out your best route.

Final thought

Each game offers that moment where you realise this is something different, no matter if its throwing ninja stars or a simple game of tag NintendoLand will surely surmise you at each turn.  So turn it on at your next party and watch the fun follow.

60 Second Review - Assassins Creed 3

Story.
This game might be marked 3rd, but its the 5th in the series. So whilst you might think your getting left out of the loop, you won't need to worry. This game introduces enough of the back story at just the right time to help fill in the gaps.

In this instalment, you play Connor, a Native American who takes up the Assassin mantle to protect his people.  Along the way you will me a cast of characters that feel right at home in colonial America. Thankfully the game does not glorify the people you meet, the first time you meet Benjamin franklin, you might not even know you did.

Gameplay
The gameplay does not stray far from the formula that was set down by the first, but it does tweak it enough for it to feel fresh. Holding down the right trigger will allow you to sprint, climb trees, buildings, cliff faces and even the rigging of a ship.

As Connor, you can spend your time tracking animals through out the wilderness, or head into town to sell or buy. One of the new additions is managing the estate that you call home. You are required to collect lumber, and then send it by convoy to be sold. But in doing that you put the convoy at risk, so you need to decide if sending the lumber for the profit you would make is worth the risk.

Generally the game plays well enough, but it does suffer from the as,e issues the first few games had, in that you sometimes find yourself running up a wall, instead of away from it. Whilst not game breaking it can get quite frustrating.  Aside from that, the game plays very well.

The ship combat and sailing portions of the game use a completely different control scheme, and it does not cause any real problems. In fact getting out on the water and letting the ship go full speed can be quite exhilarating.

Graphics
Lets be honest, this game looks amazing. You have two major cities, dozens of small ones littered about and then the expansive wilderness connecting it all. Each area has a certain look about it so you can't mistake it for somewhere else. The art style also exceeds expectations allowing nature to shine when your surrounded by it.

Connor moves around the environment with ease, and this is an area Ubisoft Montreal have excelled at for years. The facial animation is also another talking point, whilst not quite Avatar, the game portrays a look of realism without looking like photos plastered onto models. The animals found through out the game also look great.

Sound design shows that, even in the middle of nowhere, no cities and no people around there are still many amazing sounds to discover. The chatter of the animals as they move bout, the wind blowing though the trees, or perhaps even the sound of a river, all are amazing in detail and it would not surprise you to find yourself just listen, even for a few minutes.

The sounds of the bustling cities is as equally good, Boston has many little markets that show lots of people trading, shouting for the best deal.

Final thoughts
Assassins Creed 3 is game worth playing no matter what your format of choice. That game offers an expansive world that's not empty, an amazing story,  great cast of characters and solid gameplay to make each play session seem like your first.

THE 7 WONDERS OF CRYSIS 3

SYDNEY, Australia. – Dec. 6, 2012 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) and award-winning developer Crytek GmbH today announced a creative partnership with renowned filmmaker Albert Hughes to produce an online video series inspired by the upcoming sandbox shooter,Crysis 3. Entitled, “The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3”, this cinematic series will set the stage for this latest installment in the Crysis series and introduce weapons, enemies, and gameplay features new to the franchise. These cinematic shorts will also showcase the stunning visuals, dynamic environments of the urban rainforest and intense adaptive warfare fans can expect when Crysis 3 ships February 2013 in Australia and New Zealand.
“When EA and Crytek approached me about being involved in creating ‘The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3’ video series, I liked the idea of creating emotional stories using only computer generated images,” stated Albert Hughes. “The challenge of producing something intensely human without ever seeing a human on screen was incredibly compelling, and the technology of the CryENGINE that Crytek developed enabled me to do that and venture into a completely unique medium of storytelling.”

At 20 years old, filmmaker Albert Hughes shot to stardom when he and his twin brother, Allen, wrote and directed the seminal film, Menace II Society. Albert then went on to co-direct such critically-acclaimed films including Dead Presidents, From Hell and Book of Eli. For “The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3” video series, Albert was intimately involved with the development team at Crytek, writing the scripts, storyboards and shot plan for each video that was created entirely using in-game assets powered by Crytek’s revolutionary CryENGINE® 3 technology.

“The goal with ‘The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3’ video series is to reveal the incredible world we have been building for Crysis 3 and to let CryENGINE take center stage to highlight the power of our state-of-the-art game engine,” said Cevat Yerli, Chief Executive Officer of Crytek.“We’ve worked closely with Albert on this project and think that the 7 Wonders series will show the leaps and bounds that Crysis 3 is making over its predecessors.”
Powered by Crytek’s proprietary CryENGINE, Crysis 3 advances the state of the art with unparalleled visuals and dynamic shooter gameplay. Players take on the role of ‘Prophet’ as he returns to New York only to discover that the city has been encased in a Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation. The New York City Liberty Dome is a veritable urban rainforest teaming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the 7 Wonders. This dangerous new world demands advanced weapons and tactics, including the Nanosuit. Equipped with superhuman powers including cloaking, armor and enhanced visor abilities, the Nanosuit is the ultimate tool that allows players to assess, adapt and attack whatever the 7 Wonders throws at them. In addition to the Nanosuit, players will wield the powerful Predator bow and devastating alien weaponry to become the deadliest hunter on the planet.

The debut episode of “The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3” entitled “Hell of a Town” will debut on December 14, 2012. Developed by Crytek and powered by the proprietary cutting edge CryENGINE technology, Crysis 3 will be available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. 60 Second Review - New Super Mario Bros U.

New Super Mario Bros. U is not a huge departure from the format that has been set down since the first one on the Nintendo DS 6 years ago. And that’s neither good nor bad.

Story
First thing you will notice is that they have changed up the story a little bit, rather that Peach being kidnapped; Mario is thrown from her castle as Bowser invades. It’s not a massive change, but its enough to make it seem fresh.

Gameplay
The gameplay of NSMBU is the standard fare that we have all come to know and love from a 2D Mario game. Mario moves just as you would expect, and with the inclusion of the new Flying Squirrel Suit, can take to the skies, and cling to walls. The fire and ice flowers make a return as well, and that’s it. Excluding the star and the mushroom, the main game contains only three power ups, which is not a lot, but it’s enough for this plumber.

Graphics
This is Mario’s first even foray into HD, and the team at Nintendo have made it seem that he was always there. The game looks amazing, from the animation of Mario and the assortment of enemies on the screen, to the way the game uses light in some levels and clouds in others. The game will not win any awards on the graphics side, and that’s ok. The game has a unique look, with bright colours and some catchy visual tricks that are sure to impress.

Final thoughts
If you are picking up a Wii U console and are not sure what to get, then by all means New Super Mario Bros. U would be a great addition, and with the inclusion of 5 player mayhem, you’re are sure to have a blast.
