Ubisoft Launches WeareData - showcasing what the world is willing to share.

Ubisoft have launched a new website dedicated to showing how we as humans in this digital world are so open to sharing data. It is amazing how much information is out there in the world, that people have freely shared.

Watch the video below, and check out the site http://wearedata.watchdogs.com

Sydney, Australia — July 1, 2013 — Ubisoft has announced the launch of Watch_Dogs’ WeareData, an experiential website designed to gather and graph the publicly available data that govern people’s lives in a single location. WeareData is initially available for the cities of Berlin, London and Paris.

In Watch_Dogs, the highly anticipated open world action game from Ubisoft, the fictionalised city of Chicago is run by a Central Operating System (CTOS), linking all of the city’s online infrastructures and public security installations to one centralised hub. Information is at the heart of the game and also at the heart ofWeareData.

With WeareData, visitors will discover that much of the hyper-connected world imagined in Watch_Dogsalready is a reality, and that everything and everyone is truly connected. The amount of and potential uses for public and personal information that is readily available online has never been more relevant, as evidenced by today’s headlines. WeareData is designed to provide a glimpse into this reality and to give visitors a new perspective on the cities in which they live.

Watch_Dogs’ WeareData allows users to access the real-time data that organise and help run the cities of Berlin, London and Paris, as well current information on their inhabitants. Via a 3D mapping system, the consolidated, openly available information that can be easily viewed includes public transport schedules (such as subways and public bicycles), telecommunications networks (including mobile antennas, WiFi spots and advertising networks), energy consumption, traffic and safety infrastructure (like CCTV cameras and traffic lights) and regionalised socioeconomic data (such as average net income, unemployment rate and crime rate).  Also available are geo-localised social media activities for the cities’ residents, including their public posts on Facebook, Foursquare, Instagram and Twitter.

To discover the website please visithttp://wearedata.watchdogs.com/ via any Internet browser, even onsmartphones and tablets.

Watch_Dogs will hit store shelves in Australia and New Zealand on November 21 on PlayStation®3, Xbox 360®video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the Wii U™ system from Nintendo and Windows PC, and will be available around launch on PlayStation®4 and Xbox One.

The Enchanted Tiki Room - Celebrates 50 Years

Can you imagine 50 years ago, Walt Disney created the first Audio-Animatronic show. The Enchanted Tiki Room is just that.

The Last of Us - Maxi Geek Review

The Last of Us is a strange game, one where the world and tone sets up a wonderful story and characters that are very convincing that you can’t help but feel connected to them by the end, but it suffers from some odd choices.

The story of The Last of Us takes place in the future where the world has been overrun by a plague of sorts. You play as Joel, a man who has survived for 20 years since the emergence of the plague and are now living in a quarantine zone, whilst trying to eek a living out as a smuggler of certain items. It is here that Joel is introduced to Ellie, through a series of events, which ends up with them on a road trip of sorts across the United States.

While the first few hours of the game feel like they are dragging, they are paced in a way that you are sucked into the world, and it makes you feel like there is very little hope. Over the course of the game I found my attachment to Joel growing stronger, not because of who he is, but over what he does to protect Ellie.

The game itself is a pretty standard over the shoulder game, with some survival horror moments, and some stealth segments. It’s in these moments that the game struggles to find what it wants to be. Whether you are attempting to avoid fellow humans, or the infected or worse, you are strongly advised to approach each encounter with stealth in mind. However the game fails to take into account the fact that once you’re spotted your stealth options are gone.

It then turns from stealth to shooter, just like the Uncharted games, which is not an issue, the shooting mechanics are very solid and I never had issues shooting the enemies, however the lack of ammunition and other vital supplies mean that taking the shooting route is something that is best avoided at all costs, no matter the scenario.

It is in this space that the game takes an odd approach, it allows for stealth, promotes stealth, but fails to allow full stealth. The other issue that is found in the game, is one of debate across the internet, and that is how Ellie handles in those stealth segments. Now obviously there are times where you do not want enemies seeing her, and for the most part, she does remain out of sight, however she will always try to keep up with you, causing her to run out into plain sight and yet no enemies notice her.

Audacity

The game also takes a unique approach to the world design in that, as man has been forced into small camps, nature has reclaimed the cities, which is nice to see that in this post-apocalyptic world. However I did notice some very odd issues with the graphics, but they are not enough to detract from the fantastic design that Naughty Dog have done.

The sounds of the game also needs a special mention, in that while there is a musical score, it does not appear very often, even in the mix of a lot of combat, while its there, you very rarely notice it and that’s a great way for the game to work. Too many games throw a massive score in your face when the enemies are around, but thankfully ND have taken the other approach where less is more. When you do hear some of the fantastic music in cutscenes you will be blown away.

The sound design for the enemies, the non-human ones is also superbly designed. The infected people sound terrific, with the clickers and others sound just as creepy as some Hollywood classics do. The human enemies also have a great sound setup in that they will taunt if you run from the fight, you will hear fear in their voice if you take out others in their group without being seen. The only complaint with the sound, is that it was mixed for a 5.1 setup, and even if you select stereo in the options, you will get muffled voices until you’re facing the person your listen. In the 5.1 setup you hear it clear as day.

The Last of Us, as I have said has some questionable design moments, but as a whole the game is enjoyable, the story is one that has been done many times, but the characters of Joel and Ellie make you want to invest in it more than most Hollywood movies.

Alienware bring 3 new laptops to market

On Thursday night, Alienware took over a space in Sydney to present to a selected group of Australian media their new range of gaming laptops called the Alienware 14, Alienware 17 and Alienware 18. The event had multiple versions of each for people to go hands on with, and I can say that they are very well made and extremely capable machines.

Each of the laptops has a unique look to it, and it’s one that you won’t find on any other laptop from any other maker, and that’s a great thing. Because while most companies are going for the MacBook style “Ultrabook” Alienware have done the opposite and built a laptop for gaming that not only defies that sterile look but also destroys previous notions of what a laptop had to be.

The 14, being the smallest of the 3 will suit most gamers, with its overall size and power, but its lack of a traditional numerical pad on board might throw people off.
Alienware 14

The 17 and 18 are only really separated by the extra screen space, with both machines sporting some very nice specs and a numerical pad.
Alienware 17

Alienware 18

Now you might be asking yourself, well just how powerful are these laptops, well I can assure you that they are very powerful. Ubisoft were kind enough to bring Splinter Cell: Blacklist for the event, and the game ran beautifully on all 3 models of the laptops. Check back for more details about that game soon.

All the machines are using the all new haswell based i7’s from Intel and graphics from Nvidia in the form of the 700 series.  The 14 series has 3 expansion slots for more storage space, and the 17 and 18 models have 4 slots. So as a desktop replacement, there is plenty of room to grow. But if you want the best, then the 18 is the model for you, as it will come with Nvidia SLI graphics as standard, and the CPU is overclocked to 4.3GHz

To see what went into the design and creation of these impressive machines, check out this video here.

These laptops will be available online at dell.com.au with JB Hi-Fi being the retail partner for them as well.

If you are interested in these machines, the prices start at $1499 for the 14, $2499 for the 17 model and $3299 for the 18 model.

Alienware will be at PAX Australia in July, so if you’re going, check them out there and you will see just how good these laptops are. Check out some photos of the event below, you might even see me in them.

Changes to the way XBOX ONE works

Letter from Don Matrick, Head of XBOX.

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

  • An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
  • Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.
These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.
We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.
Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.
