Gears of War Judgment - Maxi-Geek Review
Gears of War Judgment takes place long before the events of the original trilogy, and is that event to witness to facets to this war, or do the battle scars run deep already?
Gameplay
For anyone who has played any of the previous Gears of War games, you won’t feel like you have to re-learn anything, as the controls in this game are amazing. They work as they always have and not once did I find myself sticking to cover due to the control issues. In fact, the controls are that good, I did not once have to think about them. I jumped right in and was on my way.
For those new to the series, the game does take its time in introducing new elements and not once does it overwhelm. And at the end of the campaign you will feel like your true veteran of the series. Moving from cover to cover is the way to stay alive in Gears of War, more so the harder the difficulty. Cover is the name of the game in many ways, as you use it to flank the enemy, get behind them to close emergence holes and even help get to your fallen comrades in the midst of combat.
Sadly, there are no times in this game where you get to ride vehicles or enemy mounts, but that does detract from the experience. As you play through the game you are tasked with explaining the events that have lead up to that point, and you will take a turn playing through as one of the 4 members of Kilo Squad. At the start of each area, a giant glowing COG sign, will add additional challenges to the map, which if you complete them, you earn more stars.
Star is the name of the game here, as the better you play the more stars you earn. And depending on the difficulty, it determines what type of stars you earn, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Onyx. At the end of the stage you are shown the results and then, If you choose, you can replay the level and attempt to get more stars.
Graphics
Being that this game is co-made by Epic Games, the makers of Unreal Engine you can see that they have mastered their tool set. The game is amazingly detailed and nothing in the world looks out of place. Even since Gears 3, they have fixed the loading issues of the graphics where it would take more time to load in textures right.
Of course, most of us have already seen the world of Sera, and the world below, many times before. But never have we seen the world with such beauty as it holds this time through. Granted, the world is mostly destroyed, but it’s these moments when you are walking through the destruction that you can see glimpses of how the world would look before the war. There are mansions to wander through, shopping areas to stroll past and even roof tops to clamber about, giving you even more of a view of the world.
Sadly, there is one aspect of the graphics where it is noticeable, and that is the cut scenes that happen mid-game. Whilst the design of the characters is there, the jump from in game graphics to a rendered scene is quite noticeable.
Sound
The sound design has not really changed a whole lot. We are treated to some new score, but the rest of the sound is really the same. The Locust horde still shout out things in their graveling gargle voices. The guns sound just as impactful as they have in past game. And when you clear an area of enemies, you get that same sound to let you know that you can stop breaking the controller into two.
It’s a shame that most of the sound is recycled, and whilst I can understand why, it would have been great to get some new sounds. Thankfully the voice acting is impressive, and its great to hear Baird and Cole bantering back and forth just like we remember them doing. The addition of Paduk and Hendrik make Kilo squad feel alive.
Final Thoughts
Gears of War Judgment does everything right with a modern game. It provides countless options for play, with single player and multiplayer content. The gameplay is well polished and the entire package shows it.
If you have mates with an Xbox, then grab some copies of Gears and hang on for a great ride.

Do we really need new consoles?
Isn't it strange that in this day and age we still find things to complain about. Not only are we as gamers getting some fantastic games, on all formats, but developers are hitting the sweet spot on their work.
Games like God of War Ascension, Gears of War Judgement and BioShock Infinite are all examples of great games that have been made for each respective format late into the “console cycle”. And yet they are some of the best games that we have to play at this time. Each game is a sequel in a series of games that has defined this generation. Yes i am aware that God of War started on the PS2, but it was the 3rd entry that made people notice.
Now lots of people, mostly high profile journalists will complain that we need to consoles, that game design is struggling right now. There is nothing new coming out but is that true. I don’t think that its the case. Just this year we are getting Watch_Dogs, a brand new IP as well as Beyond Two Souls. Both games are coming very late but both are brand new IP’s and both look beyond outstanding on these 6 year old machines.
Of course, people that make game engines, who have dreamt of electric sheep for ages, will indeed want more powerful hardware, to showcase their engine better. But if you take a look at games like Crysis 3, or even Battlefield 3, those games on console look amazing. But if you take away the graphics, is it the same game?
At any point when you’re looking at a game you are going to be drawn to the graphics. The way a game looks will always be more appealing then what the player is doing with their fingers on the controller. And it’s at this point that things are getting to complex, we have had amazing games with great physics for some time now. But it appears that we are glutens and want more. Looking at the debut footage for Playstation 4 games, can we really say they looked miles above the current consoles?
I don’t think so, sure they did look cleaner, but in terms of Killzone, just as an example it will play exactly the same as the previous ones. The controller, while having a touch screen has the same button layout as the Playstation 3 controller. Now its not a bad thing, i think each console, has got amazing controllers, each has a solid layout with no real flaws.
Does getting a new console cycle mean that we are only going to get marginally better graphics? Because thats all it seems to do from a gameplay point, at this stage. Feature sets like Gaikai for PS4 could easily be introduced into the PS3 via a firmware update. Take a look at the xbox, it has had 3 major revisions of its console software since launch, not to mention all the little add ons over the years.
So while its all well and good to have shiny graphics, the gameplay is not changing in this new generation. No matter how good a game looks if it plays like utter crap no one will care. So releasing a new console with the same controller, for the next round of Call of Duty’s and such all with a newer coat of paint wont help anyone, but you never know stranger things have happened.

60 Second Review - Assassins Creed 3
Story.
This game might be marked 3rd, but its the 5th in the series. So whilst you might think your getting left out of the loop, you won't need to worry. This game introduces enough of the back story at just the right time to help fill in the gaps.
In this instalment, you play Connor, a Native American who takes up the Assassin mantle to protect his people. Along the way you will me a cast of characters that feel right at home in colonial America. Thankfully the game does not glorify the people you meet, the first time you meet Benjamin franklin, you might not even know you did.
Gameplay
The gameplay does not stray far from the formula that was set down by the first, but it does tweak it enough for it to feel fresh. Holding down the right trigger will allow you to sprint, climb trees, buildings, cliff faces and even the rigging of a ship.
As Connor, you can spend your time tracking animals through out the wilderness, or head into town to sell or buy. One of the new additions is managing the estate that you call home. You are required to collect lumber, and then send it by convoy to be sold. But in doing that you put the convoy at risk, so you need to decide if sending the lumber for the profit you would make is worth the risk.
Generally the game plays well enough, but it does suffer from the as,e issues the first few games had, in that you sometimes find yourself running up a wall, instead of away from it. Whilst not game breaking it can get quite frustrating. Aside from that, the game plays very well.
The ship combat and sailing portions of the game use a completely different control scheme, and it does not cause any real problems. In fact getting out on the water and letting the ship go full speed can be quite exhilarating.
Graphics
Lets be honest, this game looks amazing. You have two major cities, dozens of small ones littered about and then the expansive wilderness connecting it all. Each area has a certain look about it so you can't mistake it for somewhere else. The art style also exceeds expectations allowing nature to shine when your surrounded by it.
Connor moves around the environment with ease, and this is an area Ubisoft Montreal have excelled at for years. The facial animation is also another talking point, whilst not quite Avatar, the game portrays a look of realism without looking like photos plastered onto models. The animals found through out the game also look great.
Sound design shows that, even in the middle of nowhere, no cities and no people around there are still many amazing sounds to discover. The chatter of the animals as they move bout, the wind blowing though the trees, or perhaps even the sound of a river, all are amazing in detail and it would not surprise you to find yourself just listen, even for a few minutes.
The sounds of the bustling cities is as equally good, Boston has many little markets that show lots of people trading, shouting for the best deal.
Final thoughts
Assassins Creed 3 is game worth playing no matter what your format of choice. That game offers an expansive world that's not empty, an amazing story, great cast of characters and solid gameplay to make each play session seem like your first.

Forza Horizon DLC
Microsoft, Playground Games, and Turn 10 Studios have announced the upcoming release of the “Forza Horizon Rally Expansion Pack.” Delivering immersive and authentic rally racing on the roughest, untamed roads of Colorado, the “Forza Horizon Rally Expansion Pack” will offer Horizon players an outstanding off-road racing experience with deeper ruts, higher jumps, and new surface types to explore. Players will experience authentic rally action behind the wheel of rally-tuned cars, complete with co-driver calls, and much more.
Look for further details on the “Forza Horizon Rally Expansion Pack” in the coming weeks, leading up to the release of the expansion pack on December 18.
“Forza Horizon” Season Pass Details: Full details of the “Forza Horizon” Season Pass have now been released, including newly announced content that makes the Season Pass an even more tremendous value to Forza Horizon fans. In addition to monthly DLC car packs and exclusive bonus cars, the “Forza Horizon” Season Pass includes automatic access to the “Forza Horizon Rally Expansion” pack at no additional cost.
Here’s the complete rundown of content available to “Forza Horizon” Season Pass owners:
Month One Car Pack
The Month One Car Pack for “Forza Horizon” will be available starting on October 23 and will include six cars for use in “Forza Horizon”:
· 2012 Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione -- It’s notable that Ferrari considers itself a racing team first and automaker second. Leaving no gaps in the realm of elite performance, the XX line was created to bridge between Formula One and production cars. The Evoluzione has only 30 more horsepower than the previous 599XX but is a full second faster on Ferrari’s exclusive Fiorano test track.
· 2012 Lamborghini Aventador J -- Sparing no expense, and designed in a total of six weeks for its one prospective customer, Lamborghini created the open-air Aventador J. In its cockpit you won’t find any climate control—for obvious reasons—or navigation; they would simply add weight. Powered by the standard Aventador’s 700 horsepower 6.5-liter V12, the roofless—and ruthless--J can easily achieve speeds north of 180 mph.
· 2012 Gumpert Apollo Enraged -- One of the biggest and best-kept secrets of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the Gumpert Apollo Enraged dropped jaws at its unveiling. The ultra-exclusive three units of production are street legal, but realistically are ready-to-race track cars.
· 2012 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider -- In the tradition of the open-air Giulietta of the 1950’s, but with all the performance and technology of the 8C Competizione Coupe, the 8C Spider is as graceful as you’d expect from an Alfa. It is also ready to pounce given a little motivation. Its body lines are supple; its interior boasts exposed carbon fiber and aluminum.
· 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 -- Revamping a classic car to match its predecessor is a difficult trick in the car business. The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 does so in every way and then some. Pure fun mixed with nostalgia doesn’t get much better than this.
· 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air -- Before the terms “stanced” or “tuner” were even a thought in the mind of any car enthusiast, there was the ‘57 Chevy. The Bel Air was the most upscale of the bodies sporting the most chrome and a golden grill. Whether you keep it classic, flourish it in flames, or drop in a big block, it will always get looks.
The Month One Car Pack is included free for “Forza Horizon” Season Pass owners, or available individually for 400 MS Points.
Six Monthly DLC Car Packs
Beginning in November, “Forza Horizon” fans will enjoy a steady stream of monthly DLC cars and the “Forza Horizon” Season Pass will give you instant access to all these cars as they are released. Each monthly DLC pack will include six incredible cars bound for Horizon Festival greatness – from cutting edge supercars to eminently drivable classics and all points in between. Individual DLC car packs will cost 400 MS Points but Season Pass owners will have access to the first six monthly DLC packs, from November 2012 through April 2013, at no additional cost. As always, fans will be able to use their DLC cars in a variety of monthly DLC-focused community events, contests, and challenges, including photo contests, Rivals events, and more.
Forza Horizon Rally Expansion Pack
The Forza Horizon Rally Expansion Pack will include new events, new cars, and new achievements and will cost 1,600 MS Points as a standalone purchase. The Rally Expansion Pack is included in the cost of the “Forza Horizon” Season Pass. Look for more info on this exciting expansion pack in the weeks to come.
Five Exclusive Season Pack Bonus Cars
In addition to the Month 1 Car Pack, the six Monthly DLC Packs and the Rally Expansion Pack, “Forza Horizon” Season Pass owners will also receive five exclusive Season Pass bonus cars, with one car delivered monthly for the next five months. Season Pass Bonus Cars will be available for download on the third Tuesday of each month from November 2012 through March 2013. The Season Pass Bonus Car for November is the 2006 Lamborghini Miura Concept. Look for more details on future Season Pass Bonus Cars in the coming weeks.
The “Forza Horizon” Season Pass will cost 4000 MS Points and represents savings of more than 15 percent over buying the individual content packs. Look for the “Forza Horizon” Season Pass, available for purchase on Xbox LIVE, beginning on October 23.
“Play and Win” Incentives: Players who purchase and play “Forza Horizon” during the first week of release will receive a free gift car – the Saleen S5S Raptor; a unicorn car typically only available from the “Forza Horizon” community team.
Forza Horizon: Where Cars Belong: “Forza Horizon” will be available starting on Oct. 23 in a Limited Collector’s Edition AUD $99.95 RRP and a Standard Edition AUD $79.95 RRP. The game is rated “PG” in Australia.
